Sclerotherapy

In ambulatory sclerotherapy, a sclerosing agent – in the form of a solution or foam – is injected into the affected vein. This agent stimulates the vein wall, causing it to close and be absorbed. Blood is then redirected to healthy veins.

How does ambulatory sclerotherapy work?

Ambulatory sclerotherapy is a quick and gentle procedure, in which the doctor injects a sclerosing agent directly into the affected veins. The procedure is preceded by a consultation and ultrasound examination to accurately map the veins.

The treatment itself takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes, is performed using a thin needle, and does not require anesthesia. After the injection, the vein is compressed with an elastic stocking, which helps close the vein and accelerate healing. The procedure is outpatient – patients can go home immediately and, in most cases, resume normal daily activities the same day.

Sclerotherapy is an ideal option for treating smaller varicose veins and fine surface veins (spider veins). It is used for medical reasons – for example, to relieve the feeling of heavy legs or prevent worsening venous insufficiency – as well as for cosmetic purposes. It is also often used as a complementary treatment after surgical removal of larger veins, helping to perfect the final result and ensure complete closure of the venous system.

Benefits of Sclerotherapy

Minimally invasive – the procedure is performed without cuts or stitches, using only a thin needle.
No anesthesia required – performed outpatient under local anesthesia, with the patient fully conscious throughout.
Cosmetic effect – highly effective, especially for spider veins and small varicose veins, which disappear completely.
Low discomfort – patients usually feel only mild burning or pressure at the injection site.
