Abdominal sonography (abdominal ultrasound)
Abdominal sonography, also known as abdominal ultrasound, is a non-invasive, painless, and completely radiation-free examination that provides a detailed view of the internal organs of the abdominal cavity. At the Vasmedic clinic, we use modern equipment for accurate and timely diagnosis of various health problems.
How is an abdominal ultrasound performed and why should you have one?
The examination is performed while lying on your back – the radiologist applies a conductive gel to the skin of the abdomen and gradually displays the internal organs using an ultrasound probe. The entire procedure takes approximately 15–20 minutes. The doctor will explain the findings to you immediately and give you a report.
An abdominal ultrasound is a quick, painless, and safe examination that can detect changes in the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bladder, and pelvic organs. It often alerts you to problems before they manifest as visible symptoms, making it an important part of prevention and early diagnosis.
We recommend undergoing an abdominal ultrasound:
- preventively, once a year as part of a general screening
- in case of long-term abdominal pain or bloating
- in case of digestive, gallbladder, or liver problems
- if kidney or gallstones are suspected
Instructions before abdominal and pelvic examination (abdominal and pelvic sonography)
For the most accurate results of abdominal and pelvic ultrasound examination, it is necessary to follow these instructions:
- Come on an empty stomach
Do not eat for at least 6 hours before the examination.
You may take your regular medication with a small sip of water (unless your doctor has instructed you otherwise). - Limit your fluid intake
Do not drink any fluids for at least 2 hours before the examination. - Have a sufficiently full bladder
Drink 0.5–0.75 liters of fluids (pure water, unsweetened tea) approximately 1.5–2 hours before the examination.
Do not urinate after drinking so that your bladder is full during the examination, which is especially important for assessing the pelvic organs.
