Low blood pressure (hypotension)
Low blood pressure (hypotension) means that the blood pressure in the arteries is lower than normal, usually below 100/60 mmHg.
In many people, low blood pressure is asymptomatic and harmless, but in some it can cause dizziness, fatigue or fainting.
At the Vasmedic clinic, we provide comprehensive diagnostics, monitoring and treatment of hypotension - with the aim of stabilizing blood pressure and improving quality of life.
Causes of low blood pressure
Low blood pressure can be:
- physiological (congenital) - common in young, slim people or athletes,
- acquired - due to other diseases or medications taken.
The most common causes include:
- insufficient fluid or salt intake,
- standing for a long time or getting up suddenly (orthostatic hypotension),
- heart disease or weak heart function,
- hormonal disorders (e.g., hypothyroidism, Addison's disease),
- taking medications for high blood pressure, depression or Parkinson's disease,
- anemia,
- long-term infections or exhaustion.
Symptoms of low blood pressure
Low blood pressure can manifest itself in various ways - most often:
- dizziness or a feeling of fainting,
- fainting when standing up,
- fatigue, drowsiness, weakness,
- cold hands and feet,
- headaches,
- poor concentration,
- ringing in the ears.
If these symptoms recur, it is advisable to undergo a cardiological examination to determine the cause.

Treatment of low blood pressure
Treatment depends on the cause of hypotension.
It usually involves lifestyle changes and possibly treatment of the underlying disease.
Recommendations include:
- drinking enough fluids (2–2.5 liters per day),
- adding a slightly higher amount of salt (unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor),
- getting out of bed slowly,
- wearing elastic stockings for orthostatic hypotension,
- regular exercise and movement,
- adjusting or changing medications if they cause low blood pressure.
In some cases, your doctor may prescribe medications to increase blood pressure.
