Constant urge to cough and feeling of congestion in the throat

A constant urge to cough and a feeling of congestion in the throat are common but very annoying problems.
Patients describe a feeling of mucus in the throat, the urge to cough, scratching, burning, or pressure in the throat area, often without a significant cold.

At the Vasmedic clinic, we focus on identifying the real cause of these problems, because long-term congestion and coughing are often a symptom of chronic irritation of the respiratory tract, not a common infection.

How the symptoms most commonly manifest themselves

Typical symptoms include:

  • constant throat clearing,
  • feeling of mucus or a foreign body in the throat,
  • dry or irritating cough,
  • cough more pronounced in the morning or after lying down,
  • hoarseness or change in voice,
  • urge to swallow or "clear" the throat,
  • worsening when speaking or in dry environments.

The symptoms can persist for weeks or months and significantly reduce comfort and quality of life.

The most common causes of congestion and the urge to cough

Postnasal drip
One of the most common causes.
Mucus flows from the nose or sinuses down the back of the throat and irritates the mucous membrane, causing coughing.

It can be caused by:

  • chronic rhinitis,
  • sinusitis,
  • allergies.

Allergies
Allergic rhinitis often leads to prolonged congestion without fever.
The mucous membrane is swollen and produces excessive amounts of mucus.

Reflux (return of gastric juices)

In so-called laryngopharyngeal reflux, acid reaches the pharynx and larynx.
Typical symptoms include:

  • cough without rhinitis,
  • burning sensation in the throat,
  • hoarseness,
  • worsening after eating or at night.

Dry air and irritating environments

  • air conditioning,
  • heating season,
  • dusty environment,
  • smoking (including passive smoking).

Chronic inflammation of the pharynx or vocal cords
This occurs with long-term irritation – vocal strain, smoking, reflux, infection.

Asthma or hypersensitivity of the airways
Coughing may be the only symptom of asthma, without the typical shortness of breath.

When is an examination necessary?

An examination is recommended if:

  • the symptoms persist for more than 3 weeks,
  • the cough keeps returning,
  • there is hoarseness, pain, or pressure in the throat,
  • shortness of breath or wheezing occurs,
  • treatment with conventional remedies does not help.

How examinations are conducted at the Vasmedic clinic

The aim is to find the cause of the irritation, not just to suppress the cough.

The examination may include:

  • a detailed interview about the course of the symptoms,
  • ENT or pulmonary examination,
  • examination of the nose and sinuses,
  • spirometry if asthma is suspected,
  • allergy tests,
  • reflux examination,
  • blood tests as indicated.
