Soft tissue ultrasound
Soft tissue ultrasound is a simple, non-invasive, and painless examination that allows a doctor to visualize muscles, tendons, subcutaneous fat, skin, nodules, or masses in soft tissues. It is most often used to evaluate pain, swelling, lumps, or injuries in various parts of the body.
What is soft tissue ultrasound used for?
The examination helps to:
- detect lumps, nodules, and hardening under the skin,
- distinguish between cysts, lipomas, and other benign formations,
- assess inflammatory changes, swelling, and abscesses,
- evaluate injuries to muscles, tendons, and ligaments,
- monitor known findings over time,
- decide on the need for further examination or intervention.
Ultrasound often allows the patient to be quickly reassured, as most findings are benign.
When is the examination recommended
Make an appointment if:
- you feel a lump or knot that persists,
- painful swelling or redness appears,
- there is a change in the size or shape of a formation,
- you have suffered a soft tissue injury,
- you want to check a known finding,
- your doctor needs to clarify the origin of your symptoms.
How soft tissue ultrasound is performed
- The examination usually takes 10-20 minutes.
- The doctor applies an ultrasound probe with gel to the area being examined.
- The examination is completely painless and radiation-free.
- The results are available immediately after the examination.
No special preparation is necessary.
What can be detected by ultrasound
Ultrasound can distinguish between:
- lipoma (benign fatty tumor),
- cyst (fluid-filled formation),
- inflammation or abscess,
- hematoma after injury,
- changes in muscles and tendons,
- suspicious formations requiring further examination.
In case of unclear findings, the doctor will recommend further steps.
