Surgical excision is suitable for wide, raised, uneven or poorly healing scars that cannot be effectively treated with other methods (e.g. laser or cream). These are often scars from injuries, surgeries or burns.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. The surgeon carefully excises the scar and expertly sutures the wound so that the new scar is as inconspicuous as possible. The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes, depending on the size and location of the scar.
Complete removal of the scar is not possible, but the resulting scar is thinner, more aesthetic and better grown in. Properly performed excision will significantly improve the appearance of the skin and psychological well-being.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so the patient does not feel any pain. After the procedure, there may be slight tension or sensitivity at the healing site, which can be managed with common analgesics.
- Stitches are usually removed in 7-14 days depending on the type of wound and the location on the body.
- The full healing result is visible after several weeks to months.
- Regular scar care is important (e.g. pressure massages, silicone patches, creams).
In some patients (e.g. those with a tendency towards keloid or hypertrophic healing), an unsightly scar may re-form. In such cases, other methods can be used (e.g. laser, corticosteroid injections, pressure therapy).
You can usually return to the office or light activities the second day after the procedure. It is recommended to limit physical exertion, sports and stretching of the treated area for 2-3 weeks.
