Recurrent upper respiratory tract infections
Recurrent upper respiratory tract infections are among the most common health problems in children and adults.
They manifest as recurrent colds, sore throats, coughs, hoarseness, or sinusitis that recur several times a year or persist longer than usual.
At the Vasmedic Prague clinic, we focus on uncovering the true cause of recurrent infections, not just on relieving symptoms.
What is the upper respiratory tract
The upper respiratory tract includes:
- the nose and nasal cavity,
- the paranasal sinuses,
- the nasopharynx,
- the pharynx, and the tonsils.
Infections of these areas are most often viral in origin, but can also be bacterial or related to weakened immunity or chronic inflammation.
When do we talk about recurrent infections?
Recurrent infections are considered to be infections if:
- infections occur more than 4–6 times a year,
- problems last longer than 10–14 days,
- problems return quickly after a short period of relief,
- the infection often progresses to sinusitis, bronchitis or middle ear infection,
- repeated antibiotic treatment is required.
Typical symptoms
Recurrent upper respiratory tract infections may manifest as:
- frequent or prolonged runny nose,
- a stuffy nose, facial pressure,
- a sore throat, scratchy, burning,
- a cough (both dry and productive),
- a hoarseness,
- a fever or fatigue,
- a headache,
- difficulty breathing through the nose,
- general weakness and decreased performance.
The most common causes of repeated infections
Weakened immunity
- frequent stress, lack of sleep,
- poor diet, vitamin deficiency (D, C, zinc),
- recovery after an illness.
Chronic inflammation
- chronic rhinitis or sinusitis,
- enlarged or chronically inflamed tonsils,
- untreated ENT problems.
Allergy
- allergic rhinitis often mimics an infection,
- allergic inflammation weakens the mucous membrane and facilitates infection.
Smoking and polluted environment
- active and passive smoking,
- dusty or dry environment.
Reflux (return of gastric juices)
- irritates the mucous membrane of the pharynx and promotes inflammation.
Anatomical abnormalities
- deviated nasal septum,
- narrowed nasal passages.
