Carpal tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common wrist condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by pain, tingling, and weakness in the fingers and can significantly limit daily activities. At Vasmedic Clinic, we offer accurate diagnostics and modern, minimally invasive treatment that brings long-term relief.
Causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The carpal tunnel is a narrow space in the wrist through which the tendons of the finger flexors and the median nerve pass. If this space narrows or the surrounding tissues swell, the nerve is compressed.
The most common causes include:
- repetitive manual activity (typing, working with tools, assembly work),
- long-term overuse of the hand and wrist,
- injuries and fractures in the wrist area,
- hormonal changes (e.g. during pregnancy, menopause),
- inflammatory and metabolic diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, thyroid disorders).
Typical symptoms that patients come to our neurosurgical clinic with are:
- tingling and numbness of the fingers (mainly the thumb, index finger and middle finger),
- pain in the wrist, forearm or even the entire arm,
- night pain that wakes you up from sleep,
- weakening of the hand and deterioration of grip (objects falling out of the hand),
- in advanced stages, muscle atrophy (loss of muscle mass in the thumb area).

Carpal tunnel syndrome treatment
Conservative therapy
In the early stages, problems can be solved without surgery:
- night splints that fix the wrist,
- rehabilitation exercises and physiotherapy,
- anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroid injections,
- regimen measures - limiting strenuous activities, adjusting the ergonomics of the workplace.
Surgical solution
If conservative treatment does not help or the disability is advanced, we recommend carpal tunnel surgery.
The operation is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. The doctor cuts the transverse carpal ligament, thereby releasing pressure on the nerve. The result is:
- rapid relief from nighttime tingling and pain,
- improvement of sensitivity and strength of the hand,
- prevention of permanent nerve damage.
Convalescence usually takes several weeks and is supported by rehabilitation.
Frequently asked quesitons
- Tingling and numbness in the fingers, especially at night
- Pain in the wrist or forearm that spreads to the shoulder
- Weakness in the hand, difficulty gripping objects
- Objects falling out of the hand
- Symptoms tend to be more pronounced after prolonged computer use, driving, or talking on the phone
Carpal tunnel syndrome can be caused by:
- Prolonged manual strain (working with a mouse, assembly, writing)
- Inflammation of the tendons in the wrist area
- Pregnancy (effect of hormonal changes)
- Diabetes, thyroid disease or rheumatoid arthritis
- Genetic predisposition – a narrower carpal tunnel occurs in some families
At Vasmedic, we use a combination of clinical examination and electromyography (EMG), which measures the speed of signal conduction in the nerve. The examination is fast, accurate, and non-invasive.
Conservative treatment:
- Orthosis at night or at work
- Physiotherapy
- Anti-inflammatory drugs and injections
- Change of ergonomics at work
If the problems persist, we recommend a surgical solution.
Minimally invasive surgery:
At the Vasmedic clinic, we perform minimally invasive carpal tunnel surgery, which quickly and gently relieves pressure on the nerve. The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes, is painless (local anesthesia) and allows for a quick return to normal life.
