Insertion and replacement of intrauterine devices

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterine cavity and provides long-term, reliable protection against pregnancy. It is one of the most effective methods of contraception, with an effectiveness rate of over 99%.

What is an intrauterine device?

An intrauterine device is a small T-shaped device that is inserted directly into the uterus and provides reliable protection against pregnancy for several years. There are two main types:

  • Hormonal IUD – releases low doses of hormones, acts locally, reduces bleeding and pain during menstruation.
  • Copper IUD – hormone-free, suitable for women who do not want or cannot use hormonal contraception.

How is the IUD inserted?

  1. Consultation and examination – the doctor will assess your health and recommend a suitable type of IUD.
  2. Insertion – the procedure takes only a few minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis in a gynecological chair.
  3. Brief check-up – verification of the correct position of the IUD.
  4. Follow-up check-ups – usually after 4–6 weeks and then as recommended.

Insertion can be performed at any time during the cycle, but it is most often recommended during menstruation, when the cervix is naturally slightly open.

Replacement of the intrauterine device

After its lifespan (3–10 years depending on the type), the device must be removed or replaced.

  • The replacement is similar to the insertion.
  • The removal and insertion of a new device can be performed during a single visit.
  • The procedure is quick and usually well tolerated.
