Hydrocephalus and cerebrospinal fluid flow disorders
Hydrocephalus, also known as “water on the brain,” is a condition in which cerebrospinal fluid, a fluid that normally protects the brain and spinal cord, builds up in the head. Too much of it can cause a variety of health problems, from headaches to difficulty walking or memory. At the Vasmedic clinic in Prague, we help patients with hydrocephalus and other cerebrospinal fluid flow disorders through consultations, examinations, and long-term monitoring.
Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear fluid that washes the brain and spinal cord, nourishes them and protects them from shock. If its circulation does not work properly, it begins to accumulate and increase pressure in the head. This condition is called hydrocephalus.
When can hydrocephalus occur?
- after head injuries,
- after inflammation (e.g. meningitis),
- after bleeding in the brain,
- in older people in the form of so-called normal pressure hydrocephalus - typically with problems with walking, memory and urination,
- with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (increased pressure in the head without a clear cause).
What problems can it cause?
- repeated headaches,
- unsteadiness or change in gait,
- memory disorders, concentration,
- urination, especially in older people,
- in more serious cases, deterioration of consciousness and general condition..
What we deal with at the Vasmedic clinic
