Chronic rhinitis
Chronic rhinitis is a long-term inflammation of the nasal mucosa that lasts longer than 12 weeks.
It is manifested by a permanently blocked nose, excessive mucus production, post-nasal drip, frequent sneezing or impaired sense of smell. Unlike a common cold, it does not go away within a few days and significantly reduces the quality of life.
At the Vasmedic Prague clinic, we focus on revealing the cause of chronic rhinitis and targeted treatment, not just on short-term relief of symptoms.
How chronic rhinitis manifests itself
Typical symptoms include:
- long-term nasal congestion (often alternating),
- excessive mucus production,
- postnasal drip – mucus running down the throat,
- urge to cough or clear the throat,
- frequent sneezing,
- reduced or lost sense of smell,
- headache or pressure in the face,
- hoarseness or feeling of congestion in the throat.
The most common causes of chronic rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis
- One of the most common causes.
- Triggered by allergens (pollen, dust, mites, animals), often worsens seasonally or indoors.
Non-allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis
Rhinitis without allergies, worsened by:
- temperature changes,
- dry air,
- stress,
- perfume or smoke.
Postnasal drip
- Mucus does not flow out of the nose, but down the back of the throat, causing coughing and congestion.
Chronic sinusitis
- Often associated with headaches, facial pressure, and recurrent infections.
Addiction to nasal drops
- Long-term use of decongestant sprays leads to so-called medication-induced rhinitis.
Reflux
- Stomach acids irritate the nasopharynx and promote chronic inflammation.
Anatomical causes
- Deviated septum,
- nasal polyps,
- narrowed nasal passages.
