Carotid ultrasound examination

Carotid ultrasound is a gentle, non-invasive and painless method used to image the carotid arteries. These vessels supply the brain with oxygenated blood and their narrowing or occlusion poses a high risk of stroke.

Carotid ultrasound allows the doctor to monitor the condition of the vascular walls, the presence of atherosclerotic plaques, the speed and flow of blood, and thus detect hidden problems in time. Thanks to this, prevention or treatment can be initiated before serious complications occur.

Why is carotid ultrasound important?

Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) develops gradually and without symptoms. Often, the first signs appear only during serious complications, such as a stroke or heart attack. Carotid ultrasound allows for early detection of arterial changes and helps minimize risk.

The examination helps to:

  • Detect narrowing of the carotid arteries (stenosis)
  • Identify atherosclerotic plaques and fatty deposits
  • Assess blood flow to the brain
  • Estimate the risk of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
  • Monitor the condition of patients after vascular surgeries or arterial procedures

When is a carotid ultrasound recommended

The examination is appropriate if:

  • you have high blood pressure,
  • you suffer from diabetes or high cholesterol,
  • you are a smoker or former smoker,
  • you have had a stroke or TIA,
  • you experience dizziness, lightheadedness, speech or memory disorders,
  • you have headaches of unclear origin,
  • you have a family history of vascular disease,
  • you want to preventively assess your vascular risk (especially after the age of 50).

How the examination is performed

  • The examination takes approximately 15–20 minutes,
  • The patient lies on his back with his head slightly tilted back,
  • The doctor places an ultrasound probe on the neck area,
  • The examination is completely painless, without radiation and without risk,
  • The result is known immediately after the examination.

No special preparation is required.

What can be detected with a carotid ultrasound

The examination allows:

  • to detect atherosclerotic plaques,
  • to determine the degree of narrowing of the carotid arteries,
  • to evaluate the speed and quality of blood flow,
  • to compare the flow in the right and left carotid,
  • to assess the risk of stroke.

Follow-up care

Depending on the results, the doctor may recommend:

  • adjustment of blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes treatment,
  • initiation of preventive vascular treatment,
  • lifestyle changes,
  • control ultrasound at intervals,
  • referral to a vascular or neurological specialist.

At the Vasmedic clinic, we ensure seamless follow-up of examination and treatment.

Yes, a carotid ultrasound can be performed without a doctor’s referral. It is especially recommended for individuals with risk factors or those over 50 years old.

Because it allows for early detection of carotid artery narrowing, thereby helping to prevent serious complications, especially stroke.

No, the examination is completely painless and gentle. The only sensation is the application of the cold ultrasound gel.

No special preparation is required. Just come in comfortable clothing with a loose neckline.

The examination itself usually takes 15–20 minutes, and the results are available immediately.
