What are birthmarks and freckles?

Birthmarks (nevi) are small skin formations caused by an excessive amount of pigment or blood vessels. They can be congenital or acquired and come in various shapes, colors, and sizes.
Freckles are small pigment spots that occur mainly on areas exposed to the sun. They are usually harmless, but may increase in number on sensitive skin types.

Why is it important to monitor moles?

Most moles are harmless, but some can change over time and pose a risk of skin cancer (melanoma). Therefore, it is important to pay attention to:

• sudden changes in size, color, or shape,
• itching, bleeding, or inflammation of the mole,
• rapid growth of a new formation.
